Osteopathy And Sports Injuries

Osteopaths are now being used more and more by high-level sporting professionals and teams to address their sports injuries. In this year’s World Cup, the England Soccer team brought their own dedicated osteopath along with them to Russia. Osteopaths have even been seen pitchside at Tennis Opens in Wimbledon.  Roger Federer famously used his Osteopath to treat his injured shoulder pitch side in mid game. During the London Olympic Games in 2012, there was a dedicated team of osteopaths onsite who treated top elite Olympic athletes, from over 40 different sporting backgrounds.

In New Zealand, Osteopathy is slowly permeating its way into the various sporting clubs. I personally treat an array of sporting professionals; rugby players, MMA fighters, martial artists, weightlifters, skiers, bikers, marathon runners. These range from the elite athlete to the weekend warrior, fitness enthusiasts to teenagers suffering from sports injuries.

Sports Injuries Suitable for Osteopathic Treatment:

There is a wide range of sports injuries which are suitable for osteopathic treatment, which many people are not aware of.

These include:

  • Pulled muscles
  • Groin strain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Hamstring strain
  • ITB syndrome (iliotibial band) – Runners’ knee
  • Tennis Elbow and Golfers Elbow

How Will Osteopathy Help With My Sports Injury?

First of all, a thorough case history and examination will be undertaken. Your diagnosis will be explained to you, along with an outline of all your treatment options.

A tailored made treatment programme will be devised and will aim to :

  • Provide pain relief.
  • Provide osteopathic treatment to the injury.
  • Refer for MRI, X-ray or Ultra-sound, if needed.
  • Address other areas of dysfunction in your body which could impede healing.
  • Provide a rehabilitation programme.
  • Provide treatment which will aim to prevent further sports injuries.
  • Improve overall sporting performance.
  • Return the patient back to sport in as quick as time as possible.

If you are struggling with a sports injury – definitely get in touch and we will do our best to return you to peak performance!
