Sports Injuries

Osteopaths are highly trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of acute and chronic sports injuries. Often an examination of the entire spine and peripheral joints is required, in order to ensure an accurate diagnosis and to address the root cause of the problem. Treatment and rehabilitation programmes are devised to minimise re-injury, and to allow a quicker return to physical activity, with the least amount of treatments possible. If required, we can refer you for a scan (Ultrasound/ X-ray/ MRI). We are also ACC registered providers and can submit your ACC claim on your behalf.

Osteopathic Treatment of Sports Injuries

osteopathy for sports injuriesMost sports injuries do not involve significant damage but are usually caused by sprains, strains, and joint restrictions. Osteopaths aim to improve mobility in your spine and joints and increase flexibility and strength of muscles, in order to reduce pain and spasm and prevent compensatory strains from occurring in the future. Osteopaths often find that sports injuries rarely involve one aspect of the body.

For example:

  • Hamstring and groin injuries invariably involve low back or pelvic restrictions and muscle imbalances.
  • Knee pain is often related to poor foot and ankle mechanics, thigh muscle tension and hip / pelvic problems.
  • Shoulder injuries can be caused by restrictions / tension in the ribs, neck, shoulder blades and upper back.
  • Shin splints often involve poor mechanics of the lower leg, foot / ankle and pelvis.
